Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded UK Equipment to Locate Local Nationals That Served With Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told
A confidential source has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned sensitive technology enabling Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans who collaborated with western forces.
Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk
The whistleblower, known as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were told to relocate and change their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.
Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's response of a massive breach of private information affecting approximately 19k individuals who had asked to come to the UK to flee the Taliban.
Data Disclosure Occurred
An electronic document with private information, including names, addresses and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker employed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.
The leak was discovered in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to Britain were posted on social media.
Militant Technology
Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban do not have similar capabilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed MPs.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire a contact number, they can locate your exact position. This is exactly how specialized teams achieved.”
When questioned about if militant forces had access to advanced decryption, Person A declared: “They've got everything.”
Consequences of the Data Breach
Initial findings provided to the investigation estimated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and associates of individuals impacted by the leak had been executed.
A superinjunction regarding the breach was put in force in last year and blocked all details regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, the source and the non-governmental organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.
“Our suggestion was that they change residence where feasible and switched their contact details. That constituted the primary information that, if authorities obtained these details, would lead to identification and capture,” she said.
Challenged Assessments
The source disputed that an official review conducted by a former official had been incorrect to conclude that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.
“The crucial point is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”
Person A described disturbing abuse suffered by at-risk Afghans, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.
“We have had four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
