An Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was to arrange lodging when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. Not knowing how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend the evening in a place that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed lost because a woman saw me wandering around the city center and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my situation and immediately she said I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: one of the sandwiches she had from her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and safe for the evening.
In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman letting a man she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – but still deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of human compassion. I hope karma has repaid her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more people who show such kindness.
