Israelis have come together around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed official commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an late session of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the two sides.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war management of the region

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No place seems like home any longer and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.

In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of that day in the western district, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the night falls, the anxiety comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated another two fatalities had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the southern area, health workers said.

The region's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
