Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
