New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
