Prison Surprise: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars
He battled the law and justice prevailed.
A couple of months subsequent to getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” Brazil’s democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems destined for incarceration.
Imminent Jailing
The found-guilty plotter – who had been living under residential detention in his residence while a set of court processes and challenges play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the coming days, amid increasing speculation that he will be moved to a well-known high-security facility.
Past Remarks on Inmates
During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the right-wing ex- military man displayed scant mercy for the country's jailed individuals.
“What’s the need to give those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They should just get messed, end of story. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to finish there, you simply need is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”
Incarceration Location Discussion
Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week visited the facility in an seeming attempt to dissuade the high court from banishing him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, claimed he expected the 70-year-old figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and worried his destination could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal problems – the outcome of a near-fatal stabbing during the last political campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His condition is very grave. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he added, who also worried about packed cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells holding 40 prisoners: “It's almost one meter squared per detainee.
“We spoke to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.
Supporters Voice Concerns
The senator isn't the sole person expressing views ahead of the former president’s expected detention.
Penning in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its record”.
“It represents an injustice that gnaws the spirits of many of Brazilians,” the former minister said.
Divided Popular Response
That may be accurate given the significant backing Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. Yet his predicted imprisonment has also gladdened the hearts of millions individuals who think he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to block his successor from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him assassinated.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting president's political party, said: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to get respectful care – but proper handling while incarcerated. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long praising the severe handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently asserted that human rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a penitentiary to discover what situations are actually like,” he stated.
“He is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, insulting handling”.
Potential Incarceration Conditions
Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of prisoners, his more likely assigned facility looks to be a adjacent penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” inmates called Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are considerably more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive official residence, approximately a short distance away.
As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – approximately the size of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 square meter bathroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a television and even a cooler in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report stated.
Political Responses
He criticized the speculated proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
