The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
