The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term came to light several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a child who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness resembles.

The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
