The former Liverpool manager says rejoining to manage Liverpool is theoretically possible.
The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, remarked that a future comeback is something that could happen. The 58-year-old, after a transformative nine-year spell which brought a European Cup triumph and the Premier League crown since 1990, now holds roles as head of global soccer with the Red Bull group and as an advisor with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
They secured the Premier League in the previous campaign, but many fans who adore the manager would welcome the possibility that he might come back one day. Speaking candidly, he explained to the podcast host: “I said I will never coach a different club within the country. Which implies if then it’s Liverpool...yeah. In theory, it could happen.”
“Being 58, which suggests the choice could be mine down the line, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I'll simply watch what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
When asked about what circumstances would need to occur to draw him back to the touchline, he revealed he isn't eager toward coming back. “It's unclear to me, I love what I do right now,” he stated. “I don't crave being a coach; I avoid standing in the rain through long matches; I'm glad to skip press conferences four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews weekly.
“I don’t miss the dressing room as a dressing room, but sitting in a restaurant with the players having a nice chat, that’s nice. Success was frequent so there was often positive atmosphere at the club. Remaining with me is Van Dijk's laughter in my ear for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
He spoke highly for his successor, praising him due to the changes which secured the championship last term. The team has suffered a string of losses in all competitions after a summer spending spree, though he denied the idea of it representing a decline.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker such as Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. An outstanding player. Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built balanced team. Fans shouldn't fret regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
He shared movingly about the death of the Portuguese star, a player he signed in 2020, along with the consequences at the club. Jota died tragically in a road accident together with his sibling this past summer.
“How do you replace a person like him? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, it’s the guy he was. I can’t imagine the squad missing him. I still cannot speak properly regarding this. A devastating blow for the entire squad too. Not a single person might employ it for poor performances but it is the situation. You walk in a dressing room where his spirit remains. Handling this individually is difficult. Unbearable.”
