The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal series showcasing causes the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism and Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that originally created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
The founder revealed how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries that its independence was compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
